The Art of Being Alive

We FAILED our Rough-In Electrical Inspection!

On January 11th, we received our electrical rough-in inspection report with a big red FAIL stamped on it. It was a huge disappointment for us.

But the good thing about a setback is that we had to be making progress, to be setback.

So, we treated our failure as a challenging new learning opportunity. Dave quickly picked his chin up, pressed onward, and made preparations to tackle the inspector’s list of fourteen changes which needed to be made in order to pass.

Using vacation time, he made the long trek back to Tennessee after work on Friday, February 2nd. Taylor, Dakota, and our granddog’s Remington and Silo joined him for the weekend. It was the first time Dave had seen them since their move to Knoxville last November!

On Saturday, Dave and Taylor installed a weathervane on the barn roof. Funny thing, we thrifted it back in February 2022, almost two years to the day it was finally mounted. Next, they made wood forms for the front porch and walkway in preparation for the concrete, which was scheduled to be poured on Tuesday afternoon.

Evening temperatures dropped to a low 25 °F. Dave stayed in the house, bundled up, and slept in his sleeping bag under a down comforter. Taylor, Dakota, and the granddog’s slept in their warm teepee under the starry sky.

Sunday, Dave and Taylor were working their way through the list of electrical items that needed to be completed. Long story short, Dave had a ladder collapse from underneath of him; he took a hard fall onto his back which resulted in broken ribs and severe internal bruising. The work week was cut short, and while there were a few tasks undone, the ledger board for the pergola was mounted, and the concrete for the front porch and walkway was poured before he came home. I’m so thankful that Taylor was with his dad and beyond grateful for all of his help!

We pray for speedy recovery, we “roll with the punches”, and we continue to see life as beautiful regardless of our circumstances…this is the art of living.

No difficulty can discourage, no obstacle dismay, no trouble dishearten the man who has acquired the art of being alive. Difficulties are but dares of fate, obstacles but hurdles to try his skill, troubles but bitter tonics to give him strength; and he rises higher and looms greater after each encounter with adversity.

Coming back here to post the good news, we have passed our Electrical Rough-In and Service Release Inspection, and we now have electric hooked up to the house! Hooray!
