Crew of two, we get $h!t done!
Another working vacation is in the history books. After three and a half days of hard labor, we were STANKY, exhausted, sore all over, and soooooooo ready to go home and have a hot shower!
Moving over 70 tons of concrete, gravel, and dirt, we formed and poured the 24x40 concrete pad where our future garage/winery will sit. We also dug and poured a footer in front of the house where we will be extending the porch. Let me just say, laying concrete is not woman’s work, at least not for this woman, and I have the utmost respect for those who do it every day for a living (I had to look up the stats: 2.9% of all concrete workers in the US are women, while 97.1% are men).
By weeks end, we also found time to paint all the exterior doors and hang the cedar shutters and bird houses that Dave crafted for me. I LOVE them (picture gallery enclosed below)!
The weather was about perfect. Monday, there were a few scattered rain showers, but we worked through them and managed to get everything formed/prepped before the concrete trucks arrived on Tuesday morning. From there on out, we were blessed with partly cloudy skies.
The temperature dropped down to around 39°F at night, a bit chilly, but it rose to high 60’s by late afternoon which made for splendid work weather.
I cooked breakfast and dinner on the grill/cook stove and prepped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches each morning for a quick lunch break.
We didn’t make any trips into town this visit, our working days stretched from dawn to dusk, and by evening, we were too exhausted to do anything but relax by the fire, soak in our surroundings, chat about future plans, and sip a few cocktails (pain killers) before bed.
The crescent sliver of a moon made for dark nights and beautiful starry skies, and I was thoroughly AMAZED by the fireflies burrowing just beneath the soil, it was dreamy to witness them glimmering around our feet…lighting the path below, leading us on to love! Did you know there is a song inspired by them?
“Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer
Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer
Lead us lest too far we wander
Love’s sweet voice is calling yonder
Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer
Hey, there don’t get dimmer, dimmer
Light the path below, above
And lead us on to love!
Glow little glow-worm, fly of fire
Glow like an incandescent wire
Glow for the female of the species
Turn on the AC and the DC
This night could use a little brightnin’
Light up you little ol’ bug of lightnin’
When you gotta glow, you gotta glow
Glow little glow-worm, glow
Glow little glow-worm, glow and glimmer
Swim through the sea of night, little swimmer
Thou aeronautical boll weevil
Illuminate yon woods primeval
See how the shadows deep and darken
You and your chick should get to sparkin’
I got a gal that I love so
Glow little glow-worm, glow
Glow little glow-worm, turn the key on
You are equipped with tailight neon
You got a cute vest-pocket Mazda
Which you can make both slow and fazda
I don’t know who you took a shine to
Or who you’re out to make a sign to
I got a gal that I love so
Glow little glow-worm, glow
Glow little glow-worm, glow
Glow little glow-worm, glow
Glow little glow-worm, glow”
